I thought for this, my 1174th published post, I would try something a little different.
Let me know if you think it sucks.
I will be posting songs from my seventy-one years spent on this planet and
writing about them.
We’ll start with one of the major influences on my singing (thanks Don Henley) and writing (Glenn Frey/Henley). This song is from the reunion album Hell Freezes Over from 1994 and features Timothy B. Schmidt, the bassist, on vocals.
I started playing Eagles’ music in the seventies and their songs have been on setlists of mine for going on fifty years now.
Now, compare this dreamy version to the jumpy 1976 song I wrote called Freddy Krueger’s Nightmare (a real love song).
The girl I was living with at the time thought I wrote the song about her, but I didn’t, but I let her think it anyway. I was slowly easing my way into country music in the southwest, starting a musical affair that has lasted ever since.
I will finish today’s post with a song I wrote again, all the way back in those wacky seventies. I wrote this song on the back of a sizeable young lady in a Mexican whorehouse in Nogales, Mexico.
With a Sharpie.
It was a night (weekend) of nothing but tequila, mezcal, and senoritas and I remember all the way up to writing the first two verses and the chorus before everything went kind of fuzzy.
The rest of the night was narrated to me by my buddy Stan who had accompanied me on this adventure. Apparently, I made a big deal out of finding this prostitute so I could retrieve these missing lyrics which I was sure would make a good song,
Evidently, according to Stan, we managed to find the young lady working in a cantina on Canal Street.
I said that was good, right?
Sort of.
We found her, but when she turned around to show us her back, all the writing had been smeared to the point of illegibility into one big grey smudge.
I ended up drinking more tequila and finishing the song from my original idea.
See what you think of Cantina Lady:
That weekend was a life-changer and I still smile when I remember (what I can ) of that night.
Stay well.
Wow, what a post! I’m so happy I found it, you’ve a lovely voice. Cantina Lady is definitely my favourite out of the three and gosh, what a story to accompany it 🤣
