This fine Friday morning in Arizona is awesome. It is supposed to get up to about 70 today. In the middle of January. I will definitely miss the warm weather when we leave, but I am excited to start a new chapter in our lives.
You see, the more I get to know myself with all the extra time that comes with retirement, the more I realize how full of shit I am. I mean, all my life I have felt I and only I, the Great Me, had the answers and EVERYONE ELSE was full of shit. If this isn’t an indication of one of the layers of my insanity, who knows? I wrote this when I was eight years old:
“Thank you ladies and gentlemen for attending my 87th consecutive Man of the Year award. I would like to thank the runners-up, but once again, no one was stupid enough to run against me, and if they did, they wouldn’t get any votes anyway. I would like to thank all those who made my success possible, but once again, it was all really due to my own spectacular efforts with no one of any consequence helping me. Obviously, I am truly great and in a class all my own. So go in peace with the comforting knowledge that all is right in the world and that Mark Diaz was duly recognized and awarded once again now and forever.”
Dead serious. Eight years old. That should have been some sort of behavioral psychologist red flag at the minimum. Yet, I was allowed to continue living.
So, the one takeaway from 66+ years of officially recorded existence on this planet about right or wrong is that there is no right or wrong, only what is here and now. Decisions, no matter how debatable, occur and the world adjusts to them. We move on. What else are we gonna do? Quit? Not bloody likely. The world did not stop revolving after Hiroshima or Nagasaki. We moved on. Stained as a civilization for all history, but we moved on. The only fervent hope is that valuable lessons good AND bad were learned. We moved on.
As I sit here being bombarded with the incessant vitriol boiling to the surface on TV stations and spewing 24/7 in a gleeful celebration of, dare I say it, right vs wrong? Go to ANY news feed. Right vs Wrong. Democrat vs Republican. Even international stations are putting their own geopolitical spins on our situation, none of them particularly flattering. I coulodn’t end my thought on the matter without applauding the Republican heroes who have had enough and are working together to get our country moving again.
So as I enter the late-afternoon of my life, I find I have opinions on everything and I know just enough to comment when I do, but have no compunction whatsoever about commenting with no knowledge whatsoever of the subject matter. I use the right or wrong theme a lot in my first book Emotions: Not Your Mama’s ABC’s.
