Power

Power corrupts.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Thomas Jefferson wrote that and if anyone was in a position of power for the United States, it was him.

Power comes in many forms.

There is the physical power of athletes who spend hours each day lifting weights and getting bigger and (hopefully) more powerful.

Actors and actresses wield power to emote and move us to tears or laughter. I still can’t get through Terms of Endearment or On Golden Pond with dry eyes.

Political power is the scariest.

It is not earned; it is the result of a flawed system that segregates American citizens and turns our political process into a joke amid our insistence that we are the greatest country on earth. (I had to stop and take a hit because I was laughing hard when I typed that last sentence).

How about advertising power?

The ability to get people to buy a product or service with ads is very powerful. Their message reaches audiences typically in the millions.

Capitalism at its finest.

You don’t have to be big to be powerful. Napoleon Bonaparte is an example of a powerful man packed into a 5’2” body (depending on who you believe). Mexico had a president who was 4’6” and I can’t imagine how that went.

I met a woman in Las Vegas who was a very short circus entertainer and you should check out the story Beauty in my book EMOTIONS: Not your Mama’s ABC’s! She had the power to drive me crazy and she was not much over 3 feet tall.

Then there is electric power, hydroelectric power, wind power, and nuclear power. You can’t drive in the high desert country in Palm Springs without witnessing fields of wind turbines.

Pretty trippy.

I thank God for all the parents who raise their kids with a sense of empowerment. That makes the world a better place.

One of the many blessings I have received was the ability to make people feel better about themselves. I think it is powerful because my concern is genuine and I truly want happy, confident people on this planet.

It is such a short duration; I can’t imagine going through life afraid or feeling inferior.

We are ALL rock stars and members of the same club.

Schoolteachers are some of the most powerful people on planet Earth. They have the ability to shape young minds into productive, powerful human beings.

Pay them.

When I first met my wife, the very last thing in the world I wanted to do was get married.

No way.

I was young, good-looking, making bank, and living amongst the Santa Barbara blonde girls. The very last thought I entertained was wedded bliss, but on 7/3/87 I first laid eyes on Karen.

So much for bachelorhood.

The way I finally got her to go out with me was my last resort. In frustration I asked her on the phone one night “What am I going to tell our grandchildren about how I had to kiss your ass to go out with me?”

Years later, she confided that was when she knew.

Now that’s power.

Stay well.
