To quote the great navigator Popeye, “That’s all I can stands, I can’t stands no more!”
Ruben Amorim must go.
Manchester United looked like a bunch of aimless idiots against Tottenham, a team that has somehow managed less points than the Red Devils in the Premier League. If the league season were a few matches longer, a safe bet might be for United to be relegated.
But they have to settle for losing to yet another better coached team and the chance to play in Europe’s financially lucrative Champions League competition. With that comes the ability to attract and pay the best athletes in the world with which to build a roster.
I’ve said it before, but it does bear repeating.
A mediocre coach can win several games in a season and a good coach can win them and can also find a way to upset a few of the better teams on their schedule. A great coach can find a way, no matter what the circumstances, and still find their way to victories.
Not Amorim.
This team does not play with any commitment to their new coach and his system of football and it shows on the pitch.
It is one thing to be a defensive-minded coach and build your team that way, but to ignore completely the offensive side of the ball produced yet another embarrassing defeat.
This is yet another situation that has been mishandled by ownership.
Amorim is not the first manager that enjoyed success in a lesser league only to find success elusive in the world-class Premier League. He’s not even the first Manchester United manager with that same said resume.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won in Norway and Erik Ten Hag was a big deal at Ajax in Amsterdam.
But this is the Premier League.
United are stuck with Amorim and let’s face it, if they can’t afford lunch for the staff, how are they ever going to be able to replace any of the ill-fitting pieces on the roster?
Including the coach?
Here’s my last take on this year’s team, regardless of how they finish the season:
Get that dumbass Onana off the pitch. He is the worst goal keeper I have ever seen.
Harry Maguire is still clumsy, slow, and inept.
But he’s LARGE!
Casemiro should consider heading out to pasture.
It’s time.
Yoro needs another year on the bench and training before he will be ready.
Mainoo is the most over-hyped player I’ve seen in a while.
Hojlund is a big, strong, and slow kid.
But he does not have a “nose” for the goal.
Garnacho has raw talent, but I see no development in his game.
Mount is done.
Bruno is still Bruno.
Dalot should stay.
Martinez should not.
Eriksen should bow out gracefully.
It looks like yet another year of mediocrity for my favorite football team, but I will be watching, nevertheless.
So here is to waiting out the next eighty or so days until college football season returns and I can resume my other hopeless pursuit: a national championship for my beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Stay well.
