The Rule of Law

Yet another idiot tourist in Yellowstone National Park thought he’d be cute and knowingly break a federal law by flying a drone in the park when it is plainly posted that this is illegal.

But why post the possible fine and/or jail time if you are never going to utilize and enforce them?

Six months in jail and a five thousand dollar fine will stop this fool from doing it again.
Boom!

I did it again.

Our northern neighbors, those wacky Canucks, are choosing to vacation elsewhere than the United States as a reaction to their distaste for our leadership and their new policies.

I guess they don’t want to be our 51st state after all…

Windfalls come from unexpected places.

Instead of getting a job, working hard, and saving as much money as you can, you can just travel to the great state of Louisiana and get stopped for a traffic violation.

Then, you just have to get shot in the back by some well-meaning Louisiana officer and bingo!

Nine million dollars!

The president wants to know why Asians and Europeans don’t want to buy American trucks.

Where do you want to start?

Tariffs?

Eroding political confidence?

The fact that “Made in the USA” doesn’t mean what it used to?

Two Vietnamese tourists have been swept out to sea and drowned.

Why?

The female victim tried to capture “the perfect shot” on her phone and tumbled into the Aegean Sea off the Greek island of Milos from her cruise ship (yes, another cruise ship fatality) during extremely strong winds.

I hope it was the “perfect shot.”

Because it will have to last a whole (unlived) lifetime for her and her husband who dutifully followed his wife into the deadly current.

When I read about stories of people who leave a restaurant without paying for their bill, I can’t help but think about my early experience in the food service industry. Before all the press clippings, awards, and notoriety of being a bonafide classic French Chef, I paid my dues, as many have, by working my way up from ground zero: dishwasher.

I worked my way up to Assistant Manager for my brother’s family restaurant and I got to experience firsthand the whole “defrauding an innkeeper” scenario with several customers.

It got so bad at one point, that we actually formed a little “hit squad” that would find and injure the offenders as they happily bounced away down the back streets of Tucson with their bellies full of stolen food.

If we were able to ambush the fleeing dine-n-dashers on our property, they were roughed up and THEN we would call the Tucson police to come and pick them up.

I am not proud of our actions at all, and they basically came to an end after a police officer, who had been to our restaurant for several instances, told us that we “needed to go easier” on the offenders because we were going “above and beyond” and not in a good way.

We hardly had any walkouts after that.

The thing is, as I got older and wiser, I would never turn away ANYONE who had the balls enough to ask if they could “work for a meal.”

I’d find work for them. I would make sure they worked hard and did a good job and then I would give them a good hearty meal in return.

That’s something I hope any one of us would do for a fellow human being.

Stay well.
