Like a dumbass, I used to think How does that happen? Getting caught in a flood? Just don’t go near a river!
That is until I found myself eating mescaline and standing in the middle of the Sahuaro Desert. I was following what I believed was a trail, but turned out to be a dry stream bed (arroyo).
There was exactly one single, solitary white cloud drifting in the distance.
I was only about a half-mile away from where I had parked my truck when I looked up and saw the innocent-looking little white cloud had drifted directly overhead and grown into an angry black caldron and all at once, the skies opened up, sending a steady downpour over the arid desert.
As I was getting near my truck, I felt a refreshing little trickle at first, as a benign little stream started seeping its way across my feet down the hill. In a matter of what seemed like seconds, I was holding onto a Cholla cactus, trying to pull myself up on a receding shoreline as a torrent of water was sending bushes, cacti, and other desert flotsam and jetsam cascading downhill.
Talk about painful, but at that very instant, it was one of those times in your life you can’t forget if you wanted to; I truly thought I was gonna get swept away and not in a good way.

I have to mention this: I was talking with a New Jersey police detective who had spent six years in Special Victims.
I had to ask: just how accurate is Dick Wolf’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit?
She laughed and confirmed what I had thought.
“First of all”, she started, “this unit solves a case on every episode, usually within a matter of a few days, when, in reality, investigations can take months. And you would never see the Captain (Olivia Benson) trying to run after perps. Desk jockeys every one of them.”
